Mike Stringer, Construction Manager for SSVEC Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative, maximizes his capital budget while improving the reliability of system underground cables through the use of a proprietary rejuvenation technology. As is common with solid-dielectric polyethylene insulated cables (a.k.a. XLPE cable), SSVEC started experiencing an increase in failures due to water-trees. Faced with the imminent failure of hundreds of aging underground residential distribution cables, Mike turned to the only proven and cost-effective alternative to disruptive and costly cable replacement, CableCURE.
For a fraction of replacement costs SSVEC has treated approximately 350 spans of cable since 2000, totaling nearly 130,000 cable feet. UtilX has been able to successfully treat 90% of the cables released to them, deferring replacement for 20 years or more while improving system performance.

When a splice on faulty cable exploded in an underground vault, this Canadian utility needed to look at new, cost-effective ways to restore their buried cables. After researching alternatives, Hydro-Sherbrooke in Quebec chose to inject cables afflicted with water damage or splice failures with CableCURE silicone fluid, rather than to dig and replace. To complete the job efficiently, UtilX designed a specialized splice fitting that allows two different cable sections to be injected from one manhole.

CableCURE/XL technology successfully repaired water damage and rejuvenated a 30-year-old submarine power cable for Hancock-Wood Electric Cooperative (HWEC) in North Baltimore, Ohio, U.S. UtilX designed patented flow-through splice to accommodate the maximum pressure of 400 psi needed for the project. The cost to install new splices and inject with CableCURE fluid was US$600,000. This compares favorably to the projected US$4 million to replace the damaged cable.

It is important to point out that not every span of underground cable can be cost-effectively treated with the CableCURE process. While UtilX crews average a 75% injection success rate on older cables, the remaining 25% or so of these cables cannot be injected because they have too many blocked splices or too many severe neutral corrosion sites in them to be cost-effective for silicone rejuvenation.
